Welcome to the 38th year of the Santa Cruz Girls Athletic League of Softball, which was formed in the fall of 1978 after the City of Santa Cruz had decided to drop its girls softball program after seven years in the wake of the passage of Proposition 13.

The league began with only 10 teams and two divisions in the summer of 1979 at Harvey West Park, but in its heyday in the late 1980s, GALS played every day of the week and featured four divisions and 37 teams from grades 2 through 12. The league now plays only three days a week and has roughly a third of the teams – 13 – spread over three divisions. That, though, has more to do with the growth of softball than anything else. Where once GALS was one of only a few girls softball leagues in the county, now there are no fewer than a half-dozen leagues – and that doesn't even include the handful of programs that just travel to tournaments on the weekends in the summer and beyond.

And to think it all began with only 10 teams nearly 40 years ago.
